Simplicity is the Secret to a Natural Glow

Beautiful skin is something many of us desire. However, we often believe that to have glowing skin, we need to buy expensive creams with long lists of complicated (and sometimes potentially harmful) ingredients. Our skin is our largest organ, and an indicator of our health, so we should approach its care naturally, safely and with simplicity. Switching to a simpler regimen can benefit your skin, your wallet and the environment. To make it easier for you, here are some of the skin care questions I’m most commonly asked.

Q: What oils would you recommend for a very dry face?

A: Carrot seed oil is good for dry skin. I also like patchouli — it can help even very dry skin. I always mix these oils with a heavier carrier in the winter, like a luscious macadamia oil.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for sun-damaged skin?

A: Rosehip seed oil is one of my favorites. If you add some rose or neroli essential oil to it, it’s a powerhouse for nourishing over-exposed skin.

Q: Any suggestions for an oil for someone with an oily face?

A: Jojoba oil is good for all skin types (even oily) – it is a non-saturated liquid wax and not a true oil. It is also non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), and helps nourish the skin without aggravating the natural production of sebum (oil).

Q: What do you recommend as a moisturizer for someone in their 50s?

A: Rosehip and argan with a few drops of rose essential oil help moisturize and rejuvenate mature skin.

Q: What is a natural way to support even skin tone?

A: I like to use lavender and lemon essential oils combined in a light carrier oil such as grapeseed oil.

Q: I have a dry, itchy scalp. Do you have a suggestion for something that could help? I’m worried about my hair looking greasy if I use jojoba oil on my scalp.

A: You might find that a deep conditioning treatment could help rather than oiling your entire scalp. Here is a recipe for a hair/scalp “mask” that I like:

Dry Hair Mask

1 avocado (mashed)
1 T. honey
2 T. avocado oil
6 drops lavender essential oil

Directions: Mix all ingredients and apply to damp hair. Cover mixture with a shower cap and leave on for 20 – 30 minutes. Shampoo mixture out of hair; condition and style as usual.
