 Each fall a certain inescapable hot beverage retailer ingeniously takes advantage of our seasonal craving for pumpkin and spices by getting us hooked on its oh-so-delectable, limited edition, and let’s face it, pricey pumpkin spice lattes. How much have you shelled out so far to feed the beast?

There’s no denying that the sweetly aromatic, seasonally comforting flavor of spiced pumpkin anything is addictive: pumpkin pie, cake, muffins, cheesecake, even ale, all of them irresistible. But is it the pumpkin, the spices or the season itself that captures us?

As a kid I was always in the kitchen at my mom’s elbow and I have a distinct memory of a Thanksgiving watching her make a pumpkin pie. She opened a can of pumpkin puree and I was transfixed by the unmistakable aroma, so much so that I had to taste it. To my surprise it was bland, mushy and watery all by itself; not quite sweet, but not quite a vegetable either. I found out that it wasn’t so much the pumpkin that enticed me, but the union of pumpkin, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, cream, sugar, eggs and not least of all, the rare and wonderful autumn season itself.

We wait a whole year for all of those wonderful ingredients to come together, but you can feed your craving for spiced pumpkin without spending all of your grande bucks on grandes alone. So stock up on pumpkin pie spice and try the following fall recipes, which contain just as much of that creamy, spicy-sweet pumpkin flavor that you’re desiring right now:

  1. Real pumpkin puree. It’s easier than you might think to “can the can” and make pumpkin puree for all your pumpkin treats.
  2. Pumpkin pie.
  3. Pumpkin oatmeal cookies.
  4. Raw pecan pumpkin butter, for dipping your crisp, hand-picked apples, of course!
  5. Pumpkin pie parfait.
  6. Spiced maple pecan pumpkin bread.
  7. Gluten-free pumpkin chocolate chip muffins.
  8. Pumpkin spice latte. If you just can’t get over it, at least make it organic!

    Although I like pumpkins, I was disappointed to see your recipes also featured something I don’t like very much – sweeteners. OK, I love sweet stuff, and have been cramming it down in volume for 61.5 years. Yes, I’m 62.

    Rather late in life, however, I came to realize just how much harm these sweeteners have been doing to me. All of them, not just the white granular stuff.

    So how about some savory pumpkin recipes? Thanks!
